Why You Should embrace Being A Work In Progress

‘Start before you are ready’ is one of the THE most hard-to-swallow, but ultimately most effective, pieces of advice I have ever received when it comes to working for myself.

I have always thought of myself as an organised person. I like to have my ducks in a row. I pride myself on bringing that to working with my clients – I help them to get 3am pie-in-the-sky plans and what often feels like an epic to-do list down on paper, in a logical order that makes sense. I support them to work through what they need to do step-by-step to get their projects off the ground, into real life. Coaching is brilliant for that; it utilises techniques that help you to both plan and execute big projects, with extra support to hold you to account and keep you on track.

However, being 100% prepared is not always possible in business.

In fact I’d say it’s impossible.

Too much planning, preparing and research can lead waaaaay to easily into procrastinating, over-thinking, doubts and the onset of analysis paralysis. You’ve done so much in your head, you’re already exhausted. But a big fat zero is actually happening in reality.

Is that you?

Are you guilty of over-thinking it? Putting it off?

Then you need to embrace imperfection and learn to love what you’re doing as a constant, evolving, ever-growing work-in-progress.

You’ll never be ready.

It’s never the right time.

Everything will not, at some point, be Just Right for you to quit your job/launch a new business/go self-employed.

Accept the fact that you need to start now, TODAY, from where you are, with whatever you have, and make the best of it. I’m not suggesting cutting corners or biting off more than you chew, but I am saying that you are going to need to be brave, and scared, and possibly even just a little bit embarrassed of what you are up to – if you’re not, it’s highly likely either you’re:

A) still sitting on the fence and need to make a big, bold decision ASAP, or

B) not pushing quite far enough past that comfort zone
